WCC New Years Resolutions
Welcome to the Year 2013 WCC Basketball. It has been a good year and you have made your presence felt with the 10th best RPI at .519. Gonzaga is ranked in the top 10 and are 5-0 against the Big 12. Santa Clara has Kevin Foster firmly in the POY race and plenty of WCC members are leading in the national statistics.
Cole Dickerson is ranked 4th in rebounds per game; 2nd in total rebounds
Davies, Haws and Ireland are all in the top 20 in PPG; Top 10 in total points
Kelly Olynyk is 4th in FG %
De'End Parker is 15th in 3P%
Haws is 4th in FT%
Anderson and Roquemore are 8th and 9th in Total assist; Top 20 in APG
Foster and Anderson are in the Top 20 in SPG; 4th and 9th in Total steals
Numerous other individual and team accomplishments have made this year a success, but the New Years resolutions below will make 2013 even better.
Brigham Young- BYU plans on only passing to Haws and Davies in 2013. Both players are averaging over 20 PPG and combine for 53% of BYU's total offense. The best part is they are doing it effectively, shooting a combined 52% from the field and 80% from the line
Gonzaga- Gonzaga plans on passing the ball to Kelly Olynyk in the first half. In their 2 wins over WSU and OK State Olynyk has scored 21 and 22 respectively, all in the first half. If foul trouble is an issue, they will only play him second half. Additionally Gonzaga guards plan on learning how to guard elite athletic guards.
Loyola Marymount- LMU's New years resolution is to not be average. The Lions rank middle of the road in nearly every statistical category for the WCC. Additionally LMU has been within 2 games of .500 for the last 5 years.
Santa Clara- Santa Clara has been working on their resolution for nearly a year, and it was the main reason for Kevin Foster's lack of play last year. However so far there have been no significant developments in the ability to to clone Foster. We will keep you updated on any advancements in the research, but for now Santa Clara will continue to rely on their seniors and hope that they can find a solution before next season.
San Diego- Defense seems to be the theme for the 2013 team, or rather lack there of. USD is last in the WCC in Rebounds given up and opponents FG%. Their quick guards keep them in many games with their ability to cause turn overs and get steals, but when you allow an opponent to shoot the ball at a high percentage, and rebound their misses, it doesn't calculate to a lot of wins.
San Francisco- At many times this season i thought Gonzaga and San Fransisco would have the same resolution, but Gonzaga has improved, and San Fransisco has...well... USF is shooting a terrible 64% from the Free throw line. Coach Walters continues to remind his student-athletes that these are FREE points, but the team refuses to take advantage of the opportunity. Practices in the new year will be solely focused on making unguarded Jumpers. Reports are Dwight Howard has been fired as their free-throw coach.
Saint Mary's- Has decided to market Dellavedova's used mouth guards to raise funds for constant recruiting trips to Australia. Expect to see Dellavedova wearing different colored mouth guards every game to drive up sales.
Pepperdine- The Waves are playing decent basketball right now and have decided that their New Years resolution is to find a better Mascot name. The Waves reportedly were leaning toward the Pelicans until New Orleans stole it. Now they have announced they would rather not have a name then continue to be known as the "fearsome" Waves. Additionally they will try to average at least 1000 fans at their home games, so far they average only 996.
Portland- The forgotten team this year, has many New Year's Resolutions, but the primary one is to find an identity. For many years Portland was feared for their 3 point shooting, but this year is averaging a WCC worst at 29%. They don't shoot free-throws well (67%) and are just 42% from the field. They have one of the highest turnover ratios, and one of the worst assist ratios. They continue to search for something, anything that they are good at.
